Color pattern consisting of a wide longitudinal dark stripe superposed over the bar pattern and obscuring it, its width under dorsal origin is about 2.0-2.3 times in body depth; color pattern usually over a dark background (juveniles apparently go through various color patterns during their growth and large specimens usually dull dark brown). Lateral line reaching to below dorsal fin; complete black basal caudal bar; 8 1/2 branched dorsal rays; males without suborbital flap (Ref. 39226).
