Diagnosis

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: disc broader than long, width 1.1-1.2 times length; pectoral apices subangular; snout rather fleshy, broadly angular, angle 122-130, length 1.5-2.1 times interorbital width; maximum width relatively well back on disc, length from snout tip to pectoral-fin insertion 1.7-1.8 times horizontal distance from snout tip to maximum disc width; preoral length 1.6-2.1 times mouth width; internasal distance 1.3-1.7 in prenasal length; interspiracular distance 13.1-14.4% DW; nostril length 3.0-5.2% DW; nasal curtain width 8.9-10.0% DW; small mouth, width 7.18.5% DW; horizontal distance from cloaca to caudal sting base 41-52% of disc length; thornlets present in nuchal region, at least some widely spaced denticles on tail; presence of well-spaced denticles on dorsal disc mostly in the median band region; pectoral-fin radials 107-111; total vertebral centra (including synarcual) 128-142, monospondylous centra (including synarcual) 39-47; dorsal surface medium brown with sparsely populated with small pale blue to whitish spots, largest spot on disc 0.3-0.4 times eye width; 0-2 (mean 0.6) blue spots on medial belt, largest 1.2-1.6% DW (when present), and peppered with numerous small black spots; mask-like marking pronounced, more densely covered with black peppery spots; darker branchial blotches; ventral surface of disc and pelvic fins pale with broad dark greyish submarginal bands; and tail posterior of pelvic fins bluish grey in live specimens (Ref. 137949).
