Description: females about 1/4 smaller than males; caudal fin rounded in both sexes; pelvic fin rays elongated in males, in females the second ray normally Longer than the first, giving the fin a more rounded shape (Ref. 52307). Hypurals 3+4 fused with the urostyle, hypurals 1 and 2 remain autogenous (Ref. 72415). Coloration: body medium brown to orange-red, lighter ventrally; amount and intensity of red color on body varies between individuals and populations; in males, body scales with dark margins and unpaired fins with rows of dark spots; belly of ripe females bright rosy to violet, surrounded by some silvery scales, the number of which varies between individuals (Ref. 52307). |
