Diagnosis: Aphyosemion jeanhuberi belongs to the Aphyosemion ogoense species group, which are characterized by presenting dark red margin on dorsal fin and dorsal portion of caudal fin, an asymmetric caudal fin shape, and wide dark red stripes parallel to the caudal fin rays in males (Ref. 116455). Males of A. jeanhuberi can be distinguished from males of the remaining species belonging to this assemblage by theit unique colouration consisting of isolated red dots on the flanks and caudal peduncle over a light blue background, vs. two horizontal red stripes in Aphyosemion ogoense, a wide red middorsal stripe in Aphyosemion louessense, vertical, irregular red bars in Aphyosemion pyrophore, a wide vertical red bar on the central portion of the caudal fin in Aphyosemion caudofasciatum, and horizontal lines in Aphyosemion ottogartneri (Ref. 116455).
Description: Dorsal and ventral profiles slightly convex from the snout to the posterior end of the dorsal and anal-fin bases, nearly straight on the caudal peduncle; body slender, sub-cylindrical, slightly depressed on the head, compressed posteriorly; maximum body depth at vertical just in front of the pelvic-fin base (Ref. 116455). Dorsal and anal fins located posterior to mid-body, longer than deep, tips pointed in males, rounded in females; caudal fin asymmetric, dorsal lobe longer than ventral lobe; pectoral fin rounded, the posterior margin reaching the pelvic-fin base in males; pelvic fin slightly pointed, its tip reaching the anal fin; dorsal-fin rays 13-14, the first dorsal-fin ray at vertical between the 3rd to 4th anal fin ray; anal-fin rays 15-16; caudal-fin rays 26-29; pectoral-fin rays 14; pelvic-fin rays 6 (Ref. 116455). Frontal neuromast series 'closed' type; anterior supraorbital series with three to four neuromasts; preopercular canal with six pores; one neuromast on each scale of the median longitudinal series (Ref. 116455). Scales cycloid, body entirely scaled except the ventral portion of the head; frontal squamation of the G-type; scales on the mid-longitudinal series 27-31+3; scales on the transverse series 10-11, scales around the caudal peduncle 15-16 (Ref. 116455). Premaxilla and dentary with unicuspid, slightly curved teeth (Ref. 116455).
Colouration: Male: body and head metallic light blue, dorsally light brown, ventrally whitish; irregular series of scattered red dots along flanks and caudal peduncle, dots sometimes connected vertically; three narrow oblique red bars on the opercle, a red stripe and dot below the orbit; dorsal, anal, pelvic, and caudal fin light blue; two horizontal series of dots on the proximal portion of the dorsal fin with a broad orange submarginal and a dark red marginal stripe, anal and pelvic fin with orange marginal stripes; pectoral fin hyaline with a ventral light orange margin; caudal fin with a dorsal and a ventral orange submarginal and a dark red marginal stripe, radially-arranged relatively broad red stripes parallel to the fin rays (Ref. 116455). Female: body and head brownish-grey, three to four short horizontal series of small red dots on the anterior part of the flank; two upper rows of spots extending into caudal peduncle; basal half to two thirds of the dorsal and anal fin bright blue, dorsal with isolated red dots, basal half of the anal with red dots; pectoral and pelvic fin hyaline; caudal fin hyaline with red dots in the dorso-basal portion (Ref. 116455). |
