Definition of Term

family
(English) According to the Code, a group of phylogenetically related genera or a single genus forming a taxonomic category ranking between the order and the genus; one of the categories in animal and plant classification; may contain one or more closely related genera; a rank within the family group between superfamily and subfamily; a taxon at the rank of a family; in scientific classifications, an assemblage of genera possessing certain characters in common by which they are distinguished; subordinate to phylum, class and order and superordinate to genus and species. (French) D'après le Code, un groupe de genres apparenté phylogénétiquement ou un seul genre qui forment une catégorie taxonomique qui classifie entre l'ordre et le genre; un des catégories dans animal et classification de la plante; peut en contenir un ou plus genres étroitement apparenté; un rang dans le groupe de la famille entre la superfamille et la sousfamille; une taxon au rang d'une famille; dans les classifications scientifiques, un assemblage de genres posséder des certains caractères commun par qu'ils sont distingués; subalterne à phylum, classe et ordre et superordiné à genre et espèce.
