tapetum lucidum
(English) A silvery layer in the choroid of the eye (Elasmobranchii and some marine teleosts) or within the retina (some Cyprinidae, Percidae and many bathypelagic species). Formed of guanine. Probably acts to reflect light back through the retina to increase the stimulus.
