sharks

(English) A subgroup of cartilaginous fishes; usually large, fast swimming, fish-shaped predators. The modern sharks are classified in the Selachii, together with the skates and rays they form the Neoselachii, together with a number of fossil groups, the Elasmobranchii, and together with chimaeras, the Chondrichthyes that gather all the cartilaginous fishes.
