Definition of Term

keel
(English) A lateral strengthening ridge posteriorly on the caudal peduncle or base of the caudal fin; typically found on swift-swimming fishes with a narrow caudal peduncle and a broadly lunate caudal fin; usually sharp (or fleshy) and most often, although not always, median. (See also: caudal peduncle, tunas, caudal fin)
carène
(French) Crête postérieure qui renforce latéralement le pédoncule caudal ou la base de la nageoire caudale ; se trouve typiquement chez les poissons à nage rapide possédant un pédoncule caudal étroit et une nageoire caudale large et échancrée. (See also: caudal peduncle, tunas, caudal fin)
crista peduncular
