Introduced to Great Lakes and Ohio-Missouri-Mississippi river systems of mid-western USA; elsewere as far west as Colorado (Ref. 86798). Introduced populations in Lake Ontario drainage have become established following construction of the Erie Canal. A popular fish sold in live fish markets. Found in 1 out of 6 live fish markets near the Lakes Erie and Ontario (Ref. 53249). Also Ref. 7251.

Occurs in fresh, brackish and coastal waters (Ref. 7251). Inhabits pools and other quiet-water areas of medium to large rivers, usually over mud (Ref. 86798). Neither anterolateral glandular groove nor venom gland is present (Ref. 57406).
