Conservation | Tonga’s main environmental concern is the contamination of groundwater and surface-water supplies by pesticides and leakage from solid-waste dumps. Parks and reserves have been set aside to protect critical plant and wildlife habitats. |
Geography and Climate | Tonga is an archipelago consisting of 170 islands and islets forming three main groups--Tongatapu Group, Ha‘apai Group, and Vava‘u Group--and several outlying islands. The Tonga Islands lie generally in a long north-south chain. The Tongatapu Group and the Ha‘apai Group consist of low-lying islands of coral formation, while the Vava‘u Group is volcanic and mountainous; some of the volcanoes are active. Tonga has an average annual temperature of about 24°C and receives more than 1,095 mm of rain annually. |
