Description The East-Siberian Sea Large Marine Ecosystem is a high-latitude marine region located within the Polar Cycle on the eastern part of the huge Siberian shelf. It is separated from the Laptev Sea LME by the New Siberian Islands. The East-Siberian Sea is very shallow and the region has an extensive continental shelf. There are extremely severe climatic conditions with major seasonal and annual changes. It is covered with ice for most of the year. The ice-cover varies considerably during the year and inter-annually. The coastline is indented with many islands, shallow bays, gulfs and inlets. It is influenced by the considerable inflow of river discharges. Coastal erosion is a plentiful source of suspended matter and nutrients. It is an LME with a unique sensitivity to environmental change. The LME is driven by climatic conditions, e.g. temperature, which has a great influence on the distribution, growth and recruitment of the LME’s major fish species and its other living marine resources (http://na.nefsc.noaa.gov/lme/text/lme56.htm).
