Max. size:  25 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater; pH range: 7.5; dH range: 10 - 20, potamodromous
Distribution:  North America: Atlantic slope, from the Papaloapán River to the Chachalacas River basin in Mexico.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabits lakes, preferring mesotrophic waters with a mud or sand bottom. Some populations have migrated into the lower river valleys with slow to moderate flowing waters. Feeds mainly on plant and vegetable matter supplemented by invertebrates and aquatic insects.
