Vanmanenia orcicampus
Vanmanenia orcicampus Kottelat, 2017

Family:  Gastromyzontidae (Hillstream loaches)
Max. size:  4.75 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  Asia: Laos.
Diagnosis:  This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: colour pattern consists of a midlateral row of six blotches, a middorsal row of six saddles and vermiculations between the rows of blotches and saddles and on the rest of the flank; a slender caudal peduncle, its depth 1.5 times in its length, 2.5 times in body depth; branched pectoral-fin rays 12-14 (Ref. 124503).
Biology:  The type locality was a sluggish stream in an open agricultural area, where the bottom was made of sand to cobbles at places covered with mud and the current was slow. It is unlikely to be the original habitat which was probably pebble to stone bottom. The juveniles were caught among gravel and pebble, and the adult was obtained among bamboos used to build a weir. Associated species in the area were a mix of species usually found in streams with fast current and clear water: Devario cf. laoensis, Poropuntius angustus, Scaphiodonichthys acanthopterus, Schistura defectiva, S. quaesita, Rhinogobius milleri, and species typical of sluggish waters and swamps Puntius brevis, Systomus jacobusboehlkei, Channa gachua, Macropodus opercularis (Ref. 124503).
IUCN Red List Status: Not Evaluated (N.E.) Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
