Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Melanostomiinae
Max. size:  32 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range - 1860 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: 65°N (between Greenland to Iceland) to about 44°N (Ref. 4740); two records at 26°N 16°W and 11°N 24°W. Western Atlantic: between 42°N and 37°N. Northwest Atlantic: Canada (Ref. 5951). Circumglobal in the subtropical convergence south of 35°S.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 17-20; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 16-19. Body slender, moderately compressed. Serial photophores small, deeply embedded in skin. Minute light organs scattered over skin of body (Ref. 37473).
Biology:  Mesopelagic species.
