Diagnosis: |
Dorsal spines (total): 7-7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-9; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 10-11. Second dorsal fin with 9 segmented rays; pectoral fin usually with 15 rays; lateral scales usually 33-36 extending dorsal to pectoral base; predorsal midline with cycloid scales, may be naked anteriorly; belly with few scales close to anus; and males with first dorsal din appearing triangular, higher than second dorsal fin, spines not filamentous, 2 broad black bars ventral to dorsal fins. |
Biology: |
Occurs with S. atratus in fairly wide streams and in rather calm waters, unlike most Stiphodon. |
