Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-11; Anal soft rays: 21-23; Vertebrae: 32-33. Serrapinnus sterbai can be diagnosed from all congeners by having a wide, black, lateral stripe extending from the region of the supracleithrum to the dark spot on the caudal peduncle (Ref. 96959).
