Family:  Serranidae (Sea basses: groupers and fairy basslets)
Max. size:  10 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range - 18 m
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: North Carolina to Florida (rare in Keys) and Texas, USA. Reported from Mexico and Cuba (Ref. 26340).
Diagnosis:  Stubby sea bass with a pointed snout.
Biology:  Occurs from water's edge to at least 18 m depth, often in silty water. Synchronously hermaphroditic. Not a coral-reef species (Ref. 26938).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 24 August 2012 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
