Environment:  demersal; freshwater; depth range 5 - 30 m
Distribution:  Africa: Lake Malawi.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 15-16; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8-10; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 8-9. Melanin pattern showing 9-11 vertical bars; dorsal head profile convex; lower head profile straight and almost horizontal (Ref. 40899).
Biology:  Found in sandy areas (Ref. 40899). Feeds on small cichlids, possibly small invertebrates as well (Ref. 40899). Breeding males protect an area of about 2 meters in diameter with a nest located at its center (Ref. 40899).
