Description: Characterized by male having yellowish color on upper third of side, lower body pink, magenta band between eyes, magenta band from upper eye to origin of dorsal fin; female mainly yellow or yellow orange color; presence of fleshy protuberance at front of upper lip in male; longest third dorsal spine, not prolonged; lunate caudal fin with short filamentous tips in male (Ref. 90102). |
| Rarely seen because of small size and deepwater habitat. Usually in depths over 40 m and more common in 50-60 m range where it forms small groups that swim close to the substrate (Ref. 48635); may also occur in aggregations above patch reefs on sand or rubble seaward slopes (Ref. 9710). |
