Max. size:  8 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; brackish; marine; depth range 6 - 40 m, non-migratory
Distribution:  Western Pacific: Indonesia to Fiji, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to New Caledonia. Recently recorded from Tonga (Ref. 53797).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 13-13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-15; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 14-15. Description: Adults dusky to almost black. Eye with yellow iris and black spot on pectoral fin base (Ref. 48636). Body depth 1.8-2.0 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Biology:  Adults are found in passages and outer reef slopes (Ref. 7247); also in current prone and clear water reef flats to 40 m depth (Ref. 48636). They occur singly or in small groups (Ref. 37816). Feed on zooplankton and benthic algae (Ref. 7247). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
