Family:  Serrasalmidae (Piranhas and pacus), subfamily: Myleinae
Max. size:  25 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 379.3 g
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  South America: Xingu River basin in Brazil.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Feeds on aquatic macrophytes and filamentous algae (Ref. 26700). In the aquarium it will feed on flakes and frozen food, but will also hunt down a large shrimp. Females are aggressive towards other females and can have several males in following (Calum Chalmers, pers. comm. 2007).
