Family:  Leuciscidae (Minnows), subfamily: Pogonichthyinae
Max. size:  7.1 cm TL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 3 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: southern Quebec, Canada and from Vermont to Minnesota and Iowa in the USA. Mostly restricted to Great Lakes and upper Mississippi River basins but localized in a few Atlantic drainages (St. Lawrence, Hudson, Susquehanna rivers), upper Ohio River basin and Hudson Bay (Red River in Minnesota, USA).
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Occurs in clear, vegetated lakes, and in pools and slow runs of creeks and small rivers.
