Family:  Bythitidae (Livebearing brotulas)
Max. size:  7.5 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathydemersal; marine; depth range 4540 - 5320 m
Distribution:  Northeastern Atlantic.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 48-50; Anal soft rays: 34-34; Vertebrae: 68-70. This species is distinguished by the following characters: body long, compressed and rather slender with slightly protruding lower jaw and oblique mouth cleft; head profile convex; eyes tiny, black and deep-set; with a small area surrounding the eyes red-brown; height of head and anterior body-depth equal; head slightly broader than body; palatines edentate; dorsal fin origin well behind midpoint of fish; D 48-50; predorsal length 56-64% SL (Ref. 129454).
Biology:  Rare species (Ref. 34024). Caught in non-closing bottom fishing gear (Agassiz and bottom trawls) (Ref. 129454).
