Family:  Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps), subfamily: Labeoninae
Max. size:  68 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Africa: lectotype and paralectotype locality of Labeo degeni: "Kinshasa, near the rapids" (Ref. 26192). Distribution of this species in the Congo basin as given in Ref. 26192, with reports from the marine lower Congo, Kasai, Ubangi, Wagenia Falls and upper Lualaba, is questionable.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 9-10; Vertebrae: 31-31. Lips with transverse plicae on inner surface; upper edge of dorsal fin convex or (feebly) straight; eyes in a lateral position (Ref. 12456).
Biology:  Inhabits large rivers (Ref. 4967).
