Family:  Sciaenidae (Drums or croakers)
Max. size:  25 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater; brackish; marine; depth range 1 - 40 m
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: east of Pakistan through the coastal waters of the Indian Ocean and the Indo-Australian Archipelago to the Philippines, New Guinea and to the Repulse Bay, Queensland; through the South China Sea to Hainan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Kwangtung. Reports from southern Africa are misidentifications of Johnius fuscolineatus (Ref. 13679).
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 11-11; Dorsal soft rays (total): 23-26; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 7-7
Biology:  Found in shallow coastal waters and estuaries (Ref. 9772).
