Distribution:  South America: El Cardal creek, a tributary of the Guatapé River; middle Magdalena River Basin in Colombia.
Diagnosis:  Vertebrae: 39-40. Distinguished from all species of Hemibrycon, including its sympatric species and H. fasciatusby having the following characters: dark pigment of the peduncle spot restricted to just the ventral half of the caudal peduncle; anterior lateral-line scales outlined with melanophores; and scales of posterior margin of caudal peduncle with multiple undulations (Ref. 95113). Description: Dorsal-fin rays ii-iii,7-9; anal-fin rays iii-v,22-27; pectoral-fin rays ii-iii,8-11 ; pelvic-fin rays ii,6-7 (Ref. 95113).
