Family:  Cichlidae (Cichlids), subfamily: Pseudocrenilabrinae
Max. size:  6.8 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater, non-migratory
Distribution:  Africa: Lakes Edward and George, and Kazinga Channel.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Predominantly found in open offshore waters, sometimes found close to the shore in sandy areas (Ref. 4983). As suggested by its long and coiled intestines, H. nigripinnis is a vegetarian. It feeds mainly on suspended phytoplankton. Like most Haplochromis species, it is an opportunistic feeder (Ref. 558).
