Africa: Fouta Djalon region in Guinea (upper Gambia, Bafing, upper Konkouré and the upper basins of the Little Scarcies rivers) (Ref. 2940, 81282). Also known from the rivers of Guinea Bissau (Ref. 2801). Ref. 13331 also reports species in Géba and Kolenté (Great Scarcies) rivers. |
Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-10; Anal soft rays: 8-8. Diagnosis: last simple dorsal-fin ray smooth on hind margin; scale formula 5.5/25-29/4.5; 1.5 scales between lateral line and pelvic-fin base; 9-10 scales around caudal peduncle; lateral-line scales equal in size to the normal scales; 7 branched dorsal fin rays; no barbels; lateral line incomplete, deeply depressed below dorsal fin; maximum reported size 47 mm SL (Ref. 2940, 81282).
Description: dorsal profile convex, slightly depressed at level of head; Ref. 3009 reports specimen with small tubercle at corner of mouth, probably representing vestige of a posterior barbel; lateral line incomplete with only 5-11 pored scales, curving distinctly downwards below dorsal fin; distal dorsal-fin margin convex; last simple dorsal-fin ray well developed, ossified at base; gill rakers short; D:III,7; A:III,5; P:12-14; V:I,7 (Ref. 2940, 81282).
Coloration: general appearance yellowish, back greyish; small round spot at end of caudal peduncle; some individuals have more or less distinct dark longitudinal bands on sides; pectorals dark; dorsal, anal, pelvic fins bright orange; caudal yellowish in life; males completely blackish with white tubercles on snout during breeding season (Ref. 2940, 81282). |
Affinities: B. pobeguini (with barbels) (Ref. 2940). Maximum TL was recorded at 5.8 cm (Ref. 2801). |
