Family:  Cobitidae (Spined loaches)
Max. size:  13.3 cm TL (male/unsexed); 16 cm SL (female)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Europe: Danube drainage: systems of Nera (Romania), Sava, Kupa (Slovenia, Croatia), Morava (Serbia), Vit and Iantra (Bulgaria). Extirpated in Jiu (Romania) and perhaps Iantra (Bulgaria).
Diagnosis:  Lamina ocularis absent. Body depth is 10-13% of SL. Pigmentation (Gambetta's longitudinal zone of pigmentation): zone Z2 a continuous narrow line, reaching at least below dorsal base; zone Z3 racing below dorsal base.
Biology:  Found in moderate to fast-flowing stretches of shallow rivers, on sandy banks and shores, sometimes on rock bottom with submerged vegetation (Ref. 59043). Oviparous, with distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Population not threatened as most are stable and occurs only as a few restricted populations (Ref. 59043).
