Max. size:  14 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 6 - 45 m, non-migratory
Distribution:  Indo-West Pacific: Three isolated populations: 1) southern Japan, Ryukyu Islands, and Taiwan; 2) Coral Sea including New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and eastern Australia; 3) Mauritius and RĂ©union in the western Indian Ocean. Has been photographed at Leadsman Shoal (Ref. 11228); also known from the Philippines.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 13-13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 14-15; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 13-14
Biology:  Adults inhabit outer coral or rocky reefs. They usually form large aggregations in shallow waters e.g. in lagoons; feeding well above the bottom on zooplankton (Ref. 2334). Diurnal species (Ref. 54980; 113699). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
