Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Astronesthinae
Max. size:  12 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 0 - 500 m
Distribution:  Atlantic Ocean: in the north up to 37°-41°N, southern limit to the west is 30°N and in the east 11°N; SW Atlantic at 30°S, 42°W; SE Atlantic between 16°-22°N and 2°-7°W.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Fairly common in deep oceanic waters, usually living deeper than 500 m during the day. Smaller individuals migrate to near-surface or even surface waters at night. Feeds on midwater fishes and crustaceans (Ref. 2802).
