Main Ref. Allen, G.R., 1985
Remarks Found on the continental shelf (Ref. 75154). Juveniles inhabit mangrove areas and seagrass beds (Ref. 128523). L. malabaricus /i> is the most abundant lutjanid species in trawled catches in the Gulf of Carpentaria (Ref. 9700). It is more dominant in night trawls (mean of 3/7 kg/ha, mean of 16.3 kg/hr) than in day trawls (mean: 2.4 kg/ha, mean: 11.8 kg/hr) (Ref. 9700). Dwells in coastal and offshore reefs. Nocturnal. Feeds on fishes and benthic crustaceans (Ref. 9773).
