Quote Treated as a synonym of H. kuda Bleeker, 1852 [51]; however these species are shown here to be in separate clades within. Hippocampus borboniensis is thus considered valid. The status of H. borboniensis is however not completely clear because the two specimens from Tanzania and Madagascar were also including H. capensis Boulenger, 1900. Hippocampus capensis is ecologically, geographically and morphologically distinct, and is considered Endangered by the IUCN. The species in the H. kuda complex are closely related and difficult to resolve due to their rapid divergence.
