The Black Sea specimens could belong to either species (Lepadogaster lepadogaster or L. purpurea) according to the work of Murgoci (1964)
who identified in that region the purpurea subspecies described by Briggs (1986, 1990); the population from Morocco, that Brownell (1978) found to have
intermediate distribution of meristic counts, could in fact contain specimens from both species. |
